BP Clair Ridge Project
- Saving Weight & Preventing Rust Corrosion

Nov 19,2019

During a project spanning 3 years, Fiber Glass Systems have saved the Clair Ridge project a combined total of 700+ tonnes of weight on their oil-rig topside modules, using innovative composite materials and advanced engineering services.

Our composite materials provide BP with advantages of reduced future maintenance requirements, extended asset service life & enhanced safety in the harsh North Sea offshore environments near Shetland where the Clair Ridge field is located.

Supporting Amec project design offices in London, in addition to 3 kilometres of NOV FGS Bondstrand GRE pipe systems specified for various seawater systems, we also directly supplied a huge portfolio of proprietary Pipex px® products in advanced fire performance phenolic FRP composite materials, all manufactured in our UK factories and then shipped to the construction yard in South Korea for installation, including:
· 4.2 kilometres of NORSOK compliant MARRS® OFFSHORE handrail systems, that included some 12,000 compression moulded fittings as per our patented designs, requiring over 600 individual drawings to be produced in our UK design office (click here for more info...);

· 278 Safety Gates;

· 4 Tertiary Structures;

· 290 LoSal Technology Pressure Vessels in glass reinforced epoxy materials with titanium nozzles (Click here for more info…).
Working in conjunction with our local partners World Ocean in South Korea, in addition to products we also provided full technical and site installation support to the construction team at Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), including our Field Service Engineers being on site during construction to ensure seamless delivery and coordination.

Client feedback following project completion;

“Fiber Glass Systems innovative Phenolic FRP composite structural products, including MARRS® Offshore handrails, access structures, ladders, safety gates and grating have been designed, supplied, and installed extensively throughout the BP Clair Ridge project, all performing beyond expectations throughout fabrication, and passing Lloyds Class Project testing. The Fiber Glass Systems team also provided expert technical & engineering services as part of a packaged-solution from design to completion.

The Fiber Glass Systems FRP products successfully provided a cost effective, corrosion resistant alternative solution to steel equivalents and made a significant contribution towards critical weight saving objectives. ” – Lead Topside Structural Engineer, BP

“The Fiber Glass Systems scope of supply on the BP Clair Ridge project included the design and manufacture of 290 GRE Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) pressure vessels, which were an essential part of the BP LoSal™ package.

During the contact Fiber Glass Systems engineers and project managers worked closely with BP personnel to design, test, qualify, manufacture and successfully deliver the 290 SWRO vessels in a tight timeframe.”  – Mechanical Engineer, BP
