Chemsafe® drainage solutions installed in £ multi-million UK biomedical centre

Oct 12,2019

A recent flagship project was the contract award to supply, fabricate, deliver and install bespoke drainage systems for a brand new global biomedical research and development centre.

The £400 million centre is the latest addition to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus expansion and boasts an impressive 59,821 square metres of biotech and biomedical R&D floorspace.

The superior chemical/corrosion resistance, maintenance free and lightweight properties of our materials of manufacture, such as Polypropylene (PP-H), ensured that our CHEMSAFE® chemical drainage systems, manholes and chambers were the solutions of choice for this complex project and would ensure the safe transmission and containment of the facilities waste water and chemical waste for decades to come.

Our expert Engineering Services Department (ESD) completed all required structural calculations for the steel rebar reinforcement together with concrete pour rates, and in total we supplied;

  • 92 Manholes (complete with factory-fitted steel rebar reinforcement & timber shuttering)
  • 4 Foul Water Pumping Stations (complete with factory-fitted steel rebar reinforcement & timber shuttering)
  • 1 Radioactive Pump Station
  • 3 Surface Water Pump Stations
  • 2 Petrol Interceptors
  • 1,850 metres of PP-H single contained pipe systems 110mm/160mm in diameter.

Having extensive in-house and offsite build capabilities, we were able to supply pump stations & manhole chambers with top cover form works, complete with main drain channel and bolted access, integral benching, plain spigot branch connections and step irons. In addition, we also completed in-house U-Gauge testing prior to despatch and all pump stations were delivered to site complete with all internal pumps fittings and control panels.

Our team of experienced Field Service Engineers were deployed, together with a Site Supervisor, who were subsequently based on site for the duration of the project in order to complete the product installation.

A phased delivery programme was implemented, with installation and on-site hydro testing of the system, further ensuring alignment to the client’s drainage agenda.  Advanced CCTV surveys were subsequently conducted on completed areas together with a final survey of the whole system, providing an advanced packaged project solution.
