Built off-site and water-tight
– the manholes of choice for the Grade II listed Battersea Power station redevelopment project

May 22,2019

Since its construction in the 1930’s, Battersea Power Station has always been one of London’s most distinctive and recognisable landmarks.  Decommissioned in 1983 this iconic coal-fired power station now stands empty on the South bank of the River Thames in Nine Elms, Battersea, South West London.

But all that is changing!  Now purchased by a consortium of investors this grade II listed brick building, the fourth largest in Europe, together with a large portion of the surrounding area is undergoing a transformation into 2 million square foot of retail, leisure, offices and new homes – due to open in 2020.

Fiber Glass Systems are proud to be part of this ground breaking development project with the supply of our thermoplastic off-site built manholes and chambers.

This famous brownfield site is located within close proximity of the River Thames and therefore sits in a high water table area.  This level of soil contamination can cause significant issues for construction projects which employ traditional groundworks due to the high levels of corrosion they can subsequently suffer.

Construction within the inner London area, such as Battersea, can provide clients with a number of demanding obstacles to overcome such as constrained timeframes, high site congestion and often extremely restrictive access.

Our products are specifically designed to overcome these costly issues; our manhole and chamber solutions are built completely off-site and can be delivered complete with optional extras such as our composite access structures and 3rd party inline equipment.  This can dramatically reduce project installation times for end users.

Our Thermoplastic Design for Manufacture Assembly solutions are fully water tight, preventing ingress and egress, and can be supplied to site locations with steel rebar and timber shuttering incorporated.  This enables a no-fuss, fast track placement in their final location, a reduction in the requirement for heavy lifting equipment and allows for immediate concrete pour.

To date we have supplied and fabricated 45 underslab manholes and 2 bespoke pumping stations for the Battersea projects waste water drainage systems.  We assisted in enabling rapid installation, saving days of work, and also aided improved site health & safety with the reduction in the necessity of personnel working in deep excavation areas. Our manholes provide our clients with a wealth of additional benefits including;

  • Manufactured to BS EN13598 and comply with BS EN752:2008
  • BBA HAPAS certification number 12/H186 – compliant to MCHW Volume 1, clause 507
  • WRc Approved certification number PT/335/1012 – compliant to requirements of Sewers for Adoption 7th Edition Clause E2.31
  • Extreme durability and corrosion resistance advanced thermoplastics
  • Bespoke designs to virtually any configuration to suit all project specifications
  • Guaranteed fully sealed fluid and gas tight
